Evaluating and strengthening Special Olympics' approach to sexual violence prevention

Special Olympics developed a multi-level preventive intervention that can be implemented by local community-based programs. We will conduct a formative evaluation of aspects of this intervention, validate a survey-based measure of sexual violence victimization that is acceptable and appropriate for individuals living with intellectual disabilities, and use this measure to conduct a pilot evaluation of intervention effectiveness.

Randomized trial of a shared decision-making intervention for families about firearm storage

Building from a successful pilot trial, this project translates and adapts the Family Safety Check-In for Hispanic, Spanish-speaking families in partnership with a parent advisory board; assesses its effectiveness on safe firearm storage practices in a randomized controlled trial recruiting through well-child visits in the WWAMI Practice and Research Network; and tests the family-level and dyadic mechanisms mediating effectiveness through actor-partner analyses.

Understanding longitudinal relationships between sleep and menstrual pain in adolescents

A longitudinal cohort-sequential study of 200 female adolescents in four age cohorts (13-16) examining causal relationships between sleep deficiency and menstrual pain during pubertal maturation. At baseline and 4, 8, and 12 months, participants complete a 30-day ecological momentary assessment with daily symptom diary and continuous actigraphy, alongside survey measures of sleep deficiency, pain, and psychological factors.

Evaluating Huddles as a novel approach to improving concussion safety

A cluster randomized controlled trial with league-level randomization testing whether Huddles increases the proportion of youth soccer athletes who report concussive symptoms to an adult; tests the theory-driven mechanisms explaining effectiveness, particularly perceived reporting norms; and uses mixed methods to identify determinants of successful implementation and maintenance at team and league level.

Developing a multi-dimensional measure of adolescent engagement in research

Leveraging Data for Infants with Cleft to Grow and Flourish: BLOOM

Predicts which infants with cleft will develop undernutrition and determines associations between undernutrition and surgical outcomes in a retrospective cohort of roughly 18,000 children; quantifies associations between caregiver/infant factors and undernutrition in a prospective cohort of 336 caregiver/infant pairs; and determines the contribution of caregiver/infant factors to the clinical predictive model. Aim 1 leverages curated electronic health records from PEDSnet, covering over 12 million children from 2009 to the present.
